About

Rick Carragher

I’m Rick Carragher. I’m a family guy (dad, husband, son) currently living in the Pacific Northwest, just outside Seattle. I’m originally from Philadelphia. I make my living in tech, mostly as an engineering executive (I was SVP and Head of Engingineering at Samsara and had leadership roles at Amazon). I’m interested in almost everything, and I love going deep into stuff that I’m passionate about. Current non-tech interests include coffee, cocktails, fitness, the Philadelphia Eagles (and football strategy in general), flying, and reading biographies. From a tech perspective, there’s not much I’m NOT interested in. I’m spending a fair bit of time thinking about AI, IoT, Smart Home Technology, along with how to build and scale high-performing engineering teams. What keeps me excited is all the cool stuff there is to learn.

Endurance Races

I’ve done a fair amount of distance endurance events. I’ve done everything from 5k runs to one full marathon, some triathlons up to the half-iron distance, and one long bike race.

Me running. Check out that super-old watch!

  • Three half-Ironmans. The first was the Vermont Sun in 2005, then I did the NJ Devilman the next year, and the Timberman 70.3 in New Hampshire.
  • Philadelphia Marathon (1998, I think?)
  • 3 Ragnar Relays (all in SoCal in 2015, 2017, 2019)
  • Many half-marathons (I don’t remember them all, but I think I have all the bibs!)
    • Annapolis (that’s the race in the picture above!)
    • Wilmington (this was my best)
    • Philadelphia
  • One bike race - the Tour of Battenkill

I used to say I did a fair amount of long-distance endurance events. Then I met someone…someone frankly crazy (you know who you are) who “jumps in” to marathons on 2 weeks of training and has done multiple ultra-marathons. There’s always a next-level, I suppose.
